WWF launched a new strategy that harnesses the strengths of the WWF network in a shared vision, focussing on six major goals - water, wildlife, the ocean, climate and energy, forests, and food – and three key drivers of environmental problems – markets, finance and governance.
In support of this strategy WWF undertook a redesign of its international secretariat that will further unite WWF offices and its near 7,700 staff around the world. This will help WWF to build stronger partnerships across the world with government, business, civil society and individuals. Together, we will deliver on WWF’s ambitious goals.
We are recruiting the role of Senior Advisor, Conservation Quality Committee for our International Secretariat to help us achieve our new ambitious goals, and build a future where people live in harmony with nature.
• Responsible for the smooth functioning of the Conservation Quality Committee according to the agreed TOR and modus operandi.
• Coordinates relevant project teams and experts/advisors, and analyses and assesses project and/or landscape submissions to ensure they are of sufficient quality and meet the criteria for review by the CQC. Ensure they are complete (e.g. verifying that safeguards and risk assessments are adequate) and are submitted in a timely manner.
• Provides strategic foresight to anticipate key issues and proactively manage the content and forward agenda for the CQC, working closely with the QA and Safeguards teams and other Network colleagues to understand the pipeline and likely submissions based on risk profiles.
• Advises and supports the Chair of the Committee and Director in all meetings, briefings and project team feedback and other CQC related tasks, including reporting to governance bodies and internal Network communications.
• Coordinate, organise and manage the CQC agenda and oversee the content of regular and ad-hoc CQC meetings, supporting and fully briefing the Chair and managing the work of the Assistant.
• Analyse, assess and ensure ‘quality at entry’ for project or landscape submissions - including the required safeguards and risk assessments. Reject submissions when not up to required quality or incomplete, and liaise with and advise the relevant project team on how to rectify and resubmit.
• Ensure detailed briefing of project teams on how to prepare for robust, constructive and relevant presentations and subsequent discussion at CQC, focused on key conservation objectives, key risks and mitigations.
• Provide strategic oversight and management of the CQC pipeline and forward agenda of proposals, projects and landscapes that will require CQC notification or sign-off.
• Develop and manage all CQC meeting processes and communications, including submissions forms/version control; maintenance of CQC website; drafting summary CQC outcomes for network leader comms; develop guidance documentation and examples for project teams.
• Advise and liaise with QA reviewers (from Safeguards, Risk, Legal, Finance and other relevant functions in both International and the Network) and the International QA Committee secretary to ensure all review documentation is accurate, complete and appropriately summarise for the Committee.
• Accountable for extensive outreach to offices to share technical expertise and build consensus and understanding of CQC requirements, to ensure full network participation.
• Provide advice and input to help draft and quality assure the CQC minutes and reports, including to NET and International Board (Audit Risk and Compliance Committee).
• Ensure feedback and decisions are provided to project teams in timely manner.
• Support and manage escalations of high-risk projects/landscapes to NET and/or International Board (ARCC).
• Work closely with the Safeguards team, International QA Committee Secretary and WWF-US and other NOs to ensure coordinated reviews/approvals and minimize duplication.
• Other related tasks as required by CQC Chair, Director or requests from other members of the CQC Secretariat.
• A University degree, in a commercial, business administration related or risk management subject.
• Minimum ten years’ experience in the field of general business administration and management, or project management and administration, is essential.
• Experience with project management, implementing and assessing safeguards, risk management and of developing high value conservation proposals highly desirable.
Required Skills and Competencies
• Proven experience of designing business processes, setting standards, and establishing operating policies and procedures, preferably in a project or programme management context.
• Excellent leadership and communication skills, coupled with diplomacy, numeracy, and business acumen.
• Proven interpersonal and people-management skills, complemented by excellent written and spoken English.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain clear lines of communication within a wide network of contacts is necessary.
• Good appreciation of organisational and cultural aspects of effective accountability frameworks and governance.
• Ability to work and communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals within a broad range of cultural environments and at all levels.
• Strong influencing, mentoring and coaching skills with the ability to navigate and engage complex stakeholders.
